Get your security deposit back

A firm, polite request for your deposit, or an itemized list of any deductions, plus a follow-up if they go quiet.

Do this either way (free)

  1. Give your landlord a forwarding address in writing.
  2. Keep move-out photos and video, and any move-in checklist.
  3. Ask for the deposit or a written, itemized list of deductions.
  4. Look up your state's deadline for returning deposits; it varies by state.
  5. If you don't hear back, follow up in writing, then consider small claims court.

Not legal advice. We don't cite laws or deadlines in your letter; rules vary by state, so check yours or ask a local tenant organization.
